Challenges of Getting to St. Barts

Renting a villa on the enchanting island of St. Barts is an adventure in itself, but first, let's tackle the initial hurdle: getting there. The journey presents a few options, each with its own set of perks and quirks.

For most, the journey kicks off with a flight into the airport on the neighboring island of St. Martin (SXM). From there, it's a hop onto a commuter plane for a brisk 10-12 minute flight over the shimmering Caribbean waters to St. Barts (SBH).

Winair and St. Barth Commuter are the main players shuttling travelers between SXM and SBH. They boast reasonably frequent flights, but the ticket prices might raise an eyebrow or two. Brace yourself, though, as the landing on St. Barts is nothing short of exhilarating. Picture this: your plane swoops over rugged peaks, executes a daring descent onto the petite runway, and comes to a halt just shy of the iconic St. Jean Beach.

Below is a list of just a sample of the departure flights from St. Maarten to St Barts and St. Barts back to St. Maarten. These schedules may change along with the pricing structure, but it should provide an idea of what to expect. For up-to-date flight and fare information encourage you to visit www.winair.sx

Another option to fly from SXM or the additional airport that most people are not aware of is St. Martin Grand-Case airport (SFG) is St. Barth Commuter. The SFG alternative will require a taxi ride from SXM airport, but for those that have found the flights from SXM to SBH all sold out it presents another choice. This is especially true if the ferry service is not something that appeals to you.

While this option offers a lifeline in case your international flight hits a snag, remember that flights into SBH don't operate after dark. If fate throws a curveball and you miss your connection, you'll need to pivot to Plan B: catching a ferry from SXM to SBH.

The ferry is the budget-friendly alternative, but be prepared for a longer voyage spanning about 45 minutes. Brace yourself, especially if you're prone to seasickness—the Caribbean waters can be quite the rollercoaster ride.

Now, here's where communication becomes paramount. Ensure your villa's welcoming committee is in the loop about your entire travel itinerary, from your international flight to your commuter connection. They'll be eagerly awaiting your arrival at SBH airport, ready to whisk you away to your slice of paradise. Should delays throw a wrench into your plans, a quick text message update will ensure they're prepared to accommodate your revised schedule.

And remember, if you opt for the ferry, you'll be making landfall at Gustavia Harbor, not the airport. Your hosts need to know where to meet you, so clarity is key.

The advantages of flying into SXM airport is there are numerous flights from several cities in the United States and Europe. Then you have options of several flights from St. Martin on WinAir and St. Barth Commuter as well as ferry service. If for some reason your international flight into SXM is delayed and you miss your connecting flight from SXM to SBH you have at least some options for later flights or catching the ferry. At least this way might prevent a forced overnight in SXM. Good piece of advice is to have some hotel options at your finger tips in the event you’re forced to overnight in SXM. Plus you will need to make new flights for the following day. Even if you miss the first night in your villa you will not get a refund. It is not the villa owners responsibility to offer a refund because of your issues. Might consider taking out travel insurance as a precaution.

The St. Maarten Airport has never been known for its ease of navigation. It's often bustling and bewildering for connecting passengers. Adding to the challenge, you can't check your baggage straight through from your international flight to your commuter flight. This means a pit stop at customs/immigration to grab your luggage and re-check it in. The trick? Travel light and stick to carry-ons!

As for those commuter flights on Winair and St Barth Commuter, they're not exactly luxurious. Think basic seats and no air conditioning. So, the big question is: are you up for the airport hustle and bustle, coupled with these no-frills flights?

Alternatively, consider flying into San Juan Airport (SJU) and hopping onto Tradewind Aviation. They offer premium service both on the ground and in the air. For American travelers, here's the icing on the cake: you only have to clear customs and immigration in St. Barts. Talk about a smoother journey! But, there's a catch. If your flight into San Juan runs late and you miss your Tradewind flight, there might not be any available seats on later flights—and no ferry option either. Translation? An unexpected overnight stay in San Juan.
