Dolphin Yacht Club Marblehead, MA

Dolphin Yacht Club - Marblehead, MA - DYC

To the left of the Glover Landing Condos sits DYC or better known as the Dolphin Yacht Club of Marblehead, MA. This wonderful yacht club does not have the big amenities and features such as swimming pools, tennis courts, and plenty of parking. However, what it lacks in features makes up for with personality and welcoming spirit.

Sad to say this club was formed in January, 1950 by fourteen men because they were denied services and membership of the other clubs in Marblehead. The reason behind it all was because they were Jewish. The core value of Dolphin Yacht Club was to “promote and foster the nautical spirit among its members regardless of color, race, or creed”.

The club did not own property at the time. The members operated out of the lower level of the Rockmere Hotel, which was located where Glover Landing now sits. There were lockers for the members, but they had to row out to their moorings.

By 1955 the club was able to purchase the property next door, but it was not through normal procedures as Jews were discouraged from buying property in Marblehead. The property was purchased by Lewis Athanas, who later turned it over to the club members. By the 1980’s to 1990’s the other yacht clubs started accepting Jewish members.

Dolphin Yacht Club has come a long way from the early years faced with challenges. The club has done an amazing job of renovating the entire property. Added a commercial kitchen, outdoor decks re-built, deckhouse construction, new upper level bar, exterior seating, new awnings, and space heaters. Also a fabulous bar was built with a remodeled dining area. To extend the features of the building they have also made major improvements to the dining menu.

There are also different categories of membership that include kayak/storage members, social members, boating and non-boating members. One of the best features of the club is the outstanding view overlooking Marblehead Harbor.

Encourage boaters and non-boaters to consider joining. Great people, great features, and great view. Their website is below and will provide additional information.
