Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead Ma hosting the Etchells New England Championship October 7-9, 2022

Scroll down to the bottom of this original article and you will find we’ve added the actual results.

The Etchells was first built in 1966 and designed by E.W. Etchells. It weighs 3,325 pounds with a 4.5 foot draft. The length overall is 30.50 feet and length along the water line is 22 feet. It’s beam is 7 feet. For racing there is a skipper and two crew. Fabulous boat to race as it sails up wind very well and can get exciting to sail on reaches or downwind using a spinnaker. Because it has a large amount of sail area in the main, jib, and spinnaker, it requires a strong crew. In addition, if the wind picks up, it requires some “beef” to hike out to try to keep the boat flat.

As of today, I noticed there are 19 Etchells registered. After seeing Tomas Hornos perform in the Etchells Race Week, Star World Cup Championship, and Marblehead Frostbite Series, I must say he is my favorite to win the New England Championship.

Corinthian Yacht Club was established in 1885 led by C.H.W. Foster Benjamin W. Crowninshield. Their goal was to attract sailboats between sixteen and thirty feet along the water line. The clubhouse was built in 1888 after they bought part of the land at Jack’s Point near the Marblehead lighthouse.

It has a premium location as it sits up high and has views right down Marblehead Harbor. The wrap around deck provides both sun and shade with plenty of rocking chairs. There is a delightful indoor restaurant and lounge, snack bar, stunning pool, and two tennis courts. Added bonus includes hotel rooms.

It continues to be very popular spot for wedding receptions.

Corinthian Yacht Club will be an ideal host for this Championship series as it has played a positive role in dozens of regattas over the years. The visiting competitors will surely enjoy the hospitality of the club.

My dad was a member of Corinthian Yacht Club going back to the 1960’s to 1980’s. Marblehead was bursting at the seams with hundreds of different sailboats and fleets. It was not until the early 1980’s did I race in a Etchells. In those years, the average Saturday racing days had 30-35 Etchells on the starting line. The competition was brutal with the a large number of exceptional sailors, including Dave Curtis.

Below I added a video we published that displays the spirit and personality of the Town of Marblehead. Encourage the visiting Etchells crews to take a look.

This is an edited version of the original article that includes the final results as posted below. The weather could not have been better for October in Marblehead. We were unable to get access to a powerboat to take some photographs and video of the actual event. Hopefully next time.
