Swampscott, MA

Swampscott, MA Has Quite the History

Atlantic Avenue stretches along the coastline connecting Swampscott to Lynn on the south and Marblehead to the north. In 1872 you would find all kinds of visitors of extreme elegance either using horses or vehicles. Estimates are there were over eleven thousands visitors.

Swampscott is a town located 15 miles up the coast from Boston in an area known as the North Shore. The population was 15,111 as of the 2020. A former summer resort, Swampscott is today a fairly affluent residential community and includes the village of Beach Bluff, as well as part of the neighborhood of Clifton.

Ocean House at Whale Beach

Whale Beach

There was a elegant hotel built called the Ocean House at Whale Beach in 1880. However, in 1882 it burned to the ground. R.W. Carter of Boston in 1884 rebuilt and reopened a new Ocean House, which he called the New Ocean House. The total count of hotels in Swampscott was sixteen with a total room count of six hundred. The New Ocean House became known as one of the best spas on the New England Coast. Sad to say in the middle of the twentieth century it also burnt to the ground.

Here it is 2023 and there is not one hotel room in this beautiful seaport community.

What we especially enjoy about Swampscott are the diverse selection of homes. Every street you traveled down you will find a complete variety of styles. No cookie cutter boring developments. Hard to believe some of the sizes of the homes. It clearly displays that the town was filled with some very successful people that were able to build and maintain the homes. Yet, you will also find some very modest homes lined up and down the streets that created lovely neighborhoods.

Great features include: Close proximity to the ocean & beaches, ease of access to the city of Boston that includes Boston & Maine train service, full supply of stores, shops, restaurants, and high rated school system.

Below are a series of photographs of some of points of interest and a selection of homes. You will soon discover why many people love living in Swampscott, MA.
