The History of Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA

The spirit and personality of Marblehead Neck were greatly changed when in 1870 the Eastern Yacht Club was built. In the clubs’ mission statement, it stated: “….for the purpose of encouraging yacht building and naval architecture and the cultivation of nautical science.” We’re curious if the mission statement has ever been revised as there appear to be far more tennis players and social members than sailors.

Eleven years later a hotel of eighty rooms named the Nanapashment was built high on the ocean bluff across from Eastern Yacht Club. The hotel was named after a North Shore Indian. We actually published a video that included aerial footage of a real estate listing at 70 Nanapashemet Street for Lynne Breed of Sagan Harborside Sotheby’s International Realty.
